Several times a week I read comments from women who have a fear of lifting weights. I get private messages from women asking about weight lifting, but they are afraid to do it.
“I don’t want to be too muscular.”
“I don’t want to look like a man.”
“I don’t want to be bulky.”
“I don’t want to gain weight from too much muscle.”
I’d like to put your minds at ease with regards to women and heavy lifting. I love heavy lifting and cannot imagine a life without it. I don’t necessarily always love it when I am in the midst of it, but I love the results and I love how bad ass I feel when I am able to lift heavier and heavier. It is physical and mental therapy for me.
So look, there is no amount of working out you can do as a woman that will make you look like a man. The women you see that are HUGE like men are taking drugs they shouldn’t take. Period.
We do not naturally have enough testosterone to get big huge man muscles like my husband. (Shameless opportunity for me to show off my husband’s muscles.)
If your objective is to lose fat while gaining muscle, again, you are not going to gain so much muscle that you will look like a man. The more muscle you have the better your ability to burn fat.
Women should WANT muscle. It takes up a lot less space than fat does! It’s exactly why at 5’6″ and 153 pounds I can wear a size 2/4 – muscle should be a woman’s best friend.
Here is a side by side of me – not very much difference on the scale, but hello, big difference in body composition. I am now 153 and slightly leaner than this pic at 155 – again not much scale difference but down in inches and clothing size.
Lift heavy. Do not attempt to tone your muscles. Women who are lifting light weights and doing high reps are doing so in the name of toning. It’s going to get you nowhere fast because it is too simple and your body just won’t respond. If you want to look toned you need to lift some heavy stuff and on a regular basis.
For the women who think they will look bulky if they lift weights. If you are overweight, you are already bulky. The best way to not be bulky is to get lean by losing fat via a ketogenic diet AND lifting heavy weights.
Keto + Heavy Lifting = Awesomeness
